Docs your consumers read, not a collection you share

This is the gap with the clearest edges. Insomnia's documentation covers Documents, Collections, Mock Servers, Environments, Inso CLI and Storage — there is no portal in it. So the API gets documented somewhere else: a README, a static Swagger UI bundle, a docs site maintained by someone who was not in the room when the schema changed. Someone watching at three in the morning

No monitoring is listed anywhere in Insomnia's product documentation, which is a reasonable place for a client to stop. It does mean the question "is the API up and still returning what it promised" belongs to a different tool and a different bill. Frequently asked questions

What does Routebase cover that Insomnia does not?

Four things a client does not do, and Kong's own product documentation lists none of them: a hosted documentation portal on your own domain, uptime and contract monitoring, a review step on the specification with branches and merge requests, and a choice of EU or US data residency on every plan. Those are the rows in the table where the two products are furthest apart, and they are the reason most teams end up running a second tool alongside a client.

Can I import my Insomnia collections?

Yes, directly. Insomnia Export v4 is one of three supported import formats, next to OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 and Postman Collection v2.1. A dry run lists every endpoint, schema and environment that would be created before anything is written, and the same operation exists as an MCP tool, so an agent can run the import and then generate the test suites your collection never carried.

Does Insomnia have an MCP server?

Kong documents the Koh CLI for agent access, so the question is what an agent reaches through it. We use Insomnia's vault integrations. Do you have those?

Not as external integrations — the table says so plainly. Routebase keeps secrets in encrypted environment variables, scoped per environment and per project, with an audit log over who read which secret and when. For most teams that is the whole requirement; if your security policy mandates that credentials never leave an existing AWS, GCP, HashiCorp or Azure vault, that policy is worth checking before you plan a migration.

How does data residency compare?

They solve different problems. Insomnia's Enterprise tier lets you mandate the storage type — local, git or cloud — which is about where a project lives rather than in which jurisdiction. Routebase asks you to choose EU or US at signup and keeps the workspace in that region on every plan, including the free one. Routebase is a German company, so a DPA and GDPR compliance do not require an enterprise negotiation.

Am I locked in?

No. Specs export as standard OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 in YAML or JSON at any time, and there is an Insomnia v4 exporter as well — the same format you would have imported from. Whatever you bring in, you can take back out.
