# Data Residency — Routebase

> Routebase keeps your workspace data in the region you pick when the workspace is created, the European Union or the United States, on every plan from Free to Enterprise.

Canonical page: https://routebase.dev/data-residency/

Data residency tends to show up late, as a line in a procurement questionnaire or a customer contract, and many tools answer it with an enterprise tier and a sales call. Routebase asks the question once, when you create the workspace. You pick the European Union or the United States, and the workspace stays in that region for as long as it exists, on the Free plan as much as on Enterprise. Each region is a separate deployment with its own database, file storage, background jobs and monitoring, so a spec, a test run or an uploaded file never crosses to the other side. Published docs portals and mock servers are served from the same region, and the MCP endpoint follows your workspace as well. Because the choice is a setting rather than a contract, residency stops being a reason to wait.

## One decision, made when the workspace is created

You choose the region on the Set up your workspace page, before anything is provisioned, and Routebase records it permanently against that organization.

- European Union in Frankfurt, Germany, or United States in Phoenix, Arizona, both on Microsoft Azure
- Both regions cost the same and ship the same features
- One sign-in address for everyone, app.routebase.dev routes you to your region
- Changing the region later is a scheduled migration by our support team, not a setting

## What lives in the region

Each region runs its own database, file storage, background jobs and monitoring, and workspace data is never shared between the two.

- Projects, specifications, versions, test data and uploaded files
- Published docs portals, served from the region on their own hostnames and custom domains
- Mock servers with a regional hostname, so consumers call the region you chose
- Backups stay in the region, spread across availability zones

## Data residency on every plan, enterprise controls on top

Residency is not a tier at Routebase, so a Free workspace picks its region exactly like an Enterprise one, and the identity and audit controls come with the plan that needs them.

- SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning and audit log export on Enterprise, self-service from 25 seats
- Routebase GmbH is a German company based in Berlin
- Buy through the Microsoft Marketplace and choose the region on the activation page

## Every client reaches the right region

The browser app routes itself, and the desktop app, the CLI and the MCP server carry the region with them, so a US workspace never has to remember a second address.

- The desktop app sends your region with every request
- The CLI takes the region once with routebase config set-region us, or per pipeline with ROUTEBASE_REGION
- MCP connectors for a US workspace add ?region=us to the endpoint, EU workspaces need nothing

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I change the region of a workspace later?

Not as a setting. An organization lives in exactly one region, and moving it is a scheduled migration by our support team. It usually takes a few business days and a maintenance window during which the organization is read-only. Write to support@routebase.dev with the organization name and the target region.

### Where exactly are the two regions?

The European Union region runs in Frankfurt, Germany, and the United States region in Phoenix, Arizona, both on Microsoft Azure. The United States region keeps its file storage in Washington state, and either region can span more than one Azure data centre, so the country is the promise and the data centre an operational detail.

### What runs outside the workspace region?

Your workspace data stays in the region, but a few shared services sit in front of it. Sign-in is operated by Auth0 on one tenant for both regions, transactional email is sent through one Azure Communication Services resource located in Europe, and the global edge network terminates requests close to the visitor. The safeguards for each processor are listed in the privacy policy for the application.

### Do you offer self-hosting?

No. Routebase is a hosted service in the EU or the US, and there is no on-premise edition. The region choice is how we answer residency requirements, and it applies to every plan without an enterprise contract.

### Does the region change the price or the features?

No. Both regions cost the same and run the same product, and the Enterprise plan adds SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning and audit log export in either region. Only the hostnames of mock servers and published docs portals carry the region.
