# Apidog Alternative — Routebase

> Apidog is the closest thing to a like-for-like competitor we have: one workspace for design, mocking, testing and documentation. The comparison below is therefore not about who has more boxes ticked — it is about three specific rows. Where your workspace is hosted, whether anything monitors the API once it is live, and how much an agent can actually do.

## Where the two products genuinely differ

Apidog covers a similar surface, so this page goes straight to the three rows that decide most evaluations — the ones where the products do not overlap at all. Where the workspace is hosted, whether anything watches the API once it is live, and what an agent is actually able to do. Each of them is a requirement a team either has or does not; where they apply, there is no version of Apidog that answers them.

- Data residency: EU or US on every Routebase plan, chosen at signup
- Monitoring: uptime and contract checks are part of the platform, not absent from it
- Agents: 400+ MCP tools that design, test and publish — not a read channel into an IDE
- Governance: 53+ style guide rules and 21 breaking-change rules on every plan

## Where the workspace lives, on every plan

In Apidog's matrix, Global SaaS is available everywhere and the "Europe Hosting Option" appears in exactly one column — Enterprise, marked optional. For a European team with a procurement questionnaire, that turns a $9 decision into a $27 one, and an on-premises conversation if the answer has to be stronger. In Routebase you pick EU or US at signup and the workspace stays there, on the free plan as much as on Enterprise. Routebase is a German company; the DPA and the GDPR paperwork are not a tier.

- EU or US chosen at signup, on every plan including Free
- Both regions on Microsoft Azure, with the data staying in the chosen one
- German vendor — DPA and GDPR compliance without an enterprise negotiation
- Region visible in the app and in the API, so an audit can verify it

## Something watching after the spec ships

Apidog's feature matrix is long and detailed, which makes an absence in it meaningful: there is no uptime or endpoint monitoring anywhere in it. Testing tells you the API was correct when you ran the suite; monitoring tells you it still is at four on a Sunday morning. Routebase generates monitors from the endpoints you already designed, so the check knows the contract — status, schema, latency — rather than pinging a URL and calling it green.

- Monitors generated from the spec, checking schema and status rather than reachability
- Alert policies assigned across environments, specs or individual monitors
- Incidents with timelines, plus maintenance windows so a deploy is not a page
- Scheduled test suites from Starter, in the platform — no self-hosted runner to operate

## Scheduled runs without a runner to babysit

Apidog's scheduled tasks are a capability of its self-hosted runner: you deploy it, you keep it alive, and the runs are metered in run steps — 10k a month on Free, every six hours at most until you reach Basic. That is a piece of infrastructure to deploy, patch and keep alive before a single suite runs on a schedule. Routebase runs schedules as part of the platform from the Starter tier, uncapped, and the CLI covers the CI case where you do want the run to happen on your own machines.

- Scheduled suites included from Starter, independent of monitoring limits
- No runner to deploy, patch or keep alive
- CLI runs in your own CI when you want the execution to stay in-house
- Results, diffs and history in the same place as the spec they test

## What an agent is allowed to do

Both products have MCP, and the table says so — this is about direction. Apidog's MCP server is documented as reading and caching your API specifications so an AI IDE can generate code that matches them; the data sources it names are an Apidog project, a published doc site, or OpenAPI files. That is a supply line into the editor. Routebase exposes the platform itself: 400+ tools across 31 toolsets, so an agent designs endpoints, writes schemas, builds and runs test suites, configures mocks and publishes a version — under the same role-based permissions as the human next to it.

- 400+ tools across 31 toolsets, plus 13 prompts and 12 resources
- An agent can take a spec from empty to published, tests included
- Every call scoped by your roles; RBAC on every plan, not from a tier
- Zero-install remote connector over OAuth, or stdio for local agents

## Governance that runs on every change

A design tool keeps a spec valid. Governance keeps a spec consistent across twelve of them and four teams — naming, required descriptions, error shapes, versioning discipline. Routebase ships a style guide of 53+ rules with auto-fix suggestions and 21 breaking-change rules, on every plan including the free one, and the same rules run in CI and over MCP so an agent cannot merge past them either.

- 53+ style guide rules with auto-fix suggestions, org-wide or per project
- 21 breaking-change rules checked between versions before publish
- Custom rules alongside the built-ins, enforced in the editor and in CI
- A governance score per project, so drift is visible before it is a migration

## Export OpenAPI, import it, keep the branches

Apidog exports OpenAPI 3.1, 3.0 and Swagger 2.0 in YAML or JSON, with the export range scoped to everything, selected endpoints, tags or folders. That file is exactly what Routebase runs on, so the portal, the mocks and the linting exist as soon as the import finishes. What does not travel is what never lived in the spec: the test scenarios. That work is mechanical, which is what the MCP server is for.

- OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 import, YAML or JSON, from Apidog's own export
- Dry run first — every warning and every object listed before anything is written
- Portal, try-it console and search generated from the spec on import
- Style guide runs on the first import, with auto-fix suggestions on what it flags
- An agent generates the test suites from your endpoints and runs them
- Full OpenAPI export any time — the same door you came through

## Frequently asked questions

### Apidog does most of this too. What is actually different?

Three rows, and each of them is the kind that decides a procurement. Where the data sits: Apidog's matrix lists a Europe hosting option on the Enterprise tier only, so an EU requirement costs $27 per user there and nothing here — it is part of every Routebase plan, including the free one. Whether anything watches the API after release: there is no uptime or endpoint monitoring anywhere in Apidog's matrix, while Routebase generates monitors from the endpoints you designed. And what an agent may do: Apidog's MCP server is documented as supplying specs to an IDE, Routebase exposes 400+ tools so an agent designs, tests and publishes the spec itself.

### How does the MCP server differ?

By direction. Apidog documents its MCP server as reading and caching your API specifications so an AI IDE can generate code that matches them — a supply line into the editor. Routebase exposes the platform: 400+ tools across 31 toolsets, enough for an agent to design endpoints, write schemas, generate and run test suites, configure mocks and publish a version, every call scoped by the same role-based permissions as the person who asked for it. In practice that is the difference between an agent that writes client code against your API and one that builds the API.

### Can I import an Apidog project?

Yes, through OpenAPI. Apidog exports OpenAPI 3.1, 3.0 or Swagger 2.0 as YAML or JSON, and Routebase imports 3.0 and 3.1 directly. A dry run shows every endpoint, schema and component that would be created before anything is written. The test scenarios do not come across — they are not part of an OpenAPI document in either product — so an agent regenerates them from the endpoints over MCP.

### Do you offer an on-premises version?

No — Routebase is SaaS, in the EU or US region you choose at signup, and there is no self-hosted or air-gapped edition. Worth separating the two requirements though: if the actual need is that the data stays in the EU, that is part of every Routebase plan including the free one, while Apidog places its Europe hosting option on the Enterprise tier. Only a genuine air-gap requirement rules us out.

### How does pricing compare?

The list prices are close: Apidog is free for up to four users, then $9, $18 and $27 per user/month billed annually; Routebase is free, then $9, $19 and $39. The comparison turns on what a tier has to include. A European team needing EU hosting reaches Apidog's $27 tier for that reason alone, while the same requirement is part of the free plan here — and monitoring, which has no Apidog tier at all, is included from $19.

### Am I locked in?

No. Specs export as standard OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 in YAML or JSON at any time — the same format you would have imported from Apidog. That property is worth checking in both directions before any migration, including this one.
